Volunteering Opportunities

Volunteering is a big part of Girl Scouts as well in life. Here are a few opportunities available towards earning your Silver Award or for school volunteer hours.

NAUTICUS

Ages 14 & up

The National Maritime Center in downtown Norfolk offers a variety of volunteer opportunities for students age 14 or older. Do you love science? Are you interested in learning and sharing information about the oceans, bays and rivers around us? If so, then volunteering at Nauticus might be for you. Positions are available weekdays and weekends in the aquarium, cruise support, gift shop, visitor services and education departments. To learn about joining the Nauticus team as a volunteer, contact Nancy Sorg at (757) 664-1043 or nancy.sorg@norfolk.gov. You can also download an application at www.TheNMC.org - just enter "volunteer."

VIRGINIA ZOO

Ages 15 & up

Animal Services

What do zookeepers do? Find out, be a keeper aide! Keeper aide volunteers assist Zookeepers in their day-to-day care of animals by helping to prepare diets, feed animals and clean exhibits. Since most of the Zoo’s animals are wild, there is limited "hands-on" touching. The keeper aide gains valuable educational experience through observing animals and hard work.

Our volunteers are instrumental to the success of the Virginia Zoo and we invite you to join our team. For more information, call our Volunteer Service Coordinator Pat Clark at (757) 441-2374, ext. 225 or patricia.clark@norfolk.gov.

VIRGINIA LIVING MUSEUM

Do you have an interest in natural history, physical science and/or science in general? Are you enthusiastic, friendly and dependable? Visit the Web site at www.valivingmuseum.org and click on Get Involved or call 595-1900 ext. 262.
